Demographic Spread of Muslims Across US

Population Penetration across USA

The Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies conducts The U.S. Religion Census: Religious Congregations & Membership Study (RCMS). It is a county-by-county enumeration of religious bodies in the US. The recent survey done in 2010 captures the demographic spread of Muslims in US through different statistics.

The adjacent chart shows the penetration of Muslims across various counties of US. As can be seen, the Muslim presence is more widely spread on the Eastern side of the country. On the Western side, most of the presence is on the Coastal side.

Also, Muslims tend to stay in the metropolitan areas compared to the rural counties.

Numerical Spread throughout the country

Muslims generally tend to live in large metropolitan areas. They are mostly located in Illinois, California, New York, Michigan, Texas, Florida and Ohio.

The highest Muslim presence as a proportion of population is in Illinois and the least is in Montana.

Muslim Congregation

There are more than 2100 recorded Muslim congregations in 2010. The map shows the spread across the country. As can be seen, the most congregations are in large metropolitan areas. The big congregation centers are in Bay Area, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, New York, New Jersey and Atlanta.

Map of the Second Largest Faith

Islam is the second largest faith in 20 of the states. These are primarily in the Mid-West and the South. This does not mean that it comes anywhere close to Christianity which is the largest followed faith in each of the 50 states. The comparison is between Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism for the highest adherents in each state after Christianity.

Judaism is the second largest faith in 15 of the states, followed by Buddhism which is the second largest in 12 of the states. (This chart was published by ASARB based on the same survey of 2010).
